Getting A Knee Replacement? Learn What to Expect from Rehab Experts
Welcome to the latest edition of the LifeMotion newsletter! This month, we’re kicking off our new series, “What to Expect,” by focusing on recovery after a total or partial knee replacement. Whether you’re preparing for surgery or supporting someone who is, understanding the recovery process can make it smoother and less overwhelming. Here’s a guide from our rehab experts to help you navigate the journey.
Recovery After Knee Replacement:
A Step-by-Step Guide
Knee replacement surgery is a crucial step in relieving pain and improving mobility. While recovery varies for everyone, here’s what you can generally expect during each phase of rehab.
The First 24 Hours After Surgery
In the first day or two after surgery, you’ll likely stay in the hospital under close observation, with pain management as a top priority. You’ll receive medications to control pain, prevent blood clots, and reduce infection risks.
- Early Physical Therapy: Don’t be surprised if a physical therapist visits you shortly after surgery. Moving your knee soon after the procedure is essential to promote healing, reduce stiffness, and improve muscle function. Yes, it might be uncomfortable, but getting up and moving is key!
Weeks 1-2: Starting Your Recovery
Once you’re discharged, you’ll begin structured physical therapy, often starting at home with a visiting physical therapist. The focus is on improving mobility, controlling pain, and reducing swelling.
What to Expect:
- You’ll use assistive devices like a walker or crutches to help you walk, gradually transitioning to unassisted movement.
- Therapy sessions will involve gentle bending and straightening exercises to improve flexibility.
- Pain and swelling are normal, and managing them with ice, elevation, and gentle movement is crucial. At LifeMotion, we use state-of-the-art vasopneumatic compression devices with cryotherapy to help reduce swelling and ease pain.
Weeks 3-6: Building Strength and Mobility
As you progress, you’ll likely shift from home therapy to outpatient sessions at a clinic like LifeMotion. This phase focuses on steadily improving your strength and mobility.
What to Expect:
- You’ll gradually rely less on assistive devices, and by the end of this period, you may not need them at all.
- You’ll work on exercises to strengthen your knee and surrounding muscles, with a focus on stretching, strengthening, and balance.
- You’ll start resuming everyday activities, like climbing stairs or driving. At LifeMotion, we use the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill to help patients regain their walking confidence and endurance.
Long-Term Recovery: 2-6 Months and Beyond
Recovery doesn’t stop after a few weeks. Over the next several months, your knee will continue to get stronger, especially if you stay committed to your rehab plan.
What to Expect:
- By 3-6 months, many patients return to most daily activities, including walking, swimming, and even light sports like golf or pickleball.
- Pain should continue to decrease, though occasional discomfort may linger. Swelling may still occur after activity but will gradually subside.
- Your physical therapist will adjust your exercises to suit your specific goals, ensuring long-term knee function and strength.
Tips for a Smooth Recovery
- Pre-hab Makes a Difference: Pre-surgery physical therapy, or “pre-hab,” can help build strength and make recovery easier. It’s been shown to improve both short- and long-term outcomes after knee replacement.
- Stay Active (But Not Too Active): Follow your therapist’s advice and listen to your knee. Striking the right balance is important—too much movement can increase soreness and swelling, but too little can lead to stiffness.
- Watch for Warning Signs: If you notice increased redness, warmth, swelling, or unusual pain, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
- Be Patient: Recovery takes time. Celebrate your progress, no matter how small, and remember that steady effort will pay off.
