Jenks Blood flow restriction training is an innovative physical therapy treatment that combines low intensity exercise with limited blood flow into a limb to achieve high intensity exercise effects. This is done through the use of an external device applied to the upper portion of an arm or leg, which allows blood to flow into the limb, but does not allow blood to flow out. This creates an environment in the arm or leg that promotes gains in muscle size and strength without requiring heavy loads or resistance. This form of exercise training has been shown to be safe and effective for high level competitive athletes, weekend warriors, and the elderly population alike. Blood flow restriction can be used in all types of physical therapy cases, including post-surgery to prevent a decrease in muscle size from disuse, muscle or tendon injuries, joint sprains, and even osteoarthritis cases to promote muscle strength gains.
While blood flow restriction can be performed using elastic bands or a hand-held pressure cuff, these forms of application are less personalized and accurate, leading to less than optimal results. At LifeMotion Physical Therapy we utilize a state of the art Delfi Personalized Tourniquet System to allow real-time continuous monitoring of limb occlusion and guarantee uniform application regardless of individual patient characteristics. This ensures precision, personalization to each individual, and most importantly, patient safety with every use. Additionally, our physical therapy staff have taken additional training and been certified in Personalized Blood Flow Restriction Rehabilitation through Owens Recovery Science, the leading educational and research group in blood flow restriction.
