Part of our Parkinson’s program includes therapist-led exercises through functional movement patterns to encourage better movement in daily life. This program can help people with Parkinson’s, other neurological diagnoses or mobility issues. This series of exercises consists of going forward, down and up to simulate getting out of a chair more easily. I’m going to encourage everyone to try these moves at home or wherever you’re reading this newsletter. They are more difficult than they seem, and they can reveal issues with mobility or motor sequencing that could require a consultation from a physical therapist. The better we’re able to move, the better we’re able to do the things in our life. Here’s an example of an exercise that can be difficult for people with neurological diagnoses, including Parkinson’s, because you’re having to cross over the center of your body. You’re having to use all sides of your brain as you cross over and twist and hold in a stretch that helps with mobility.
And our goal is always to translate moves into daily life. And so here, we’ve gone through the sequence of exercises and now, we get to put it all together and practice standing off of a surface. And so everything we do in therapy, we try to translate into everyone’s individual goals in life. So if this is something that interests you or you feel like you could benefit from, whether you’re newly diagnosed or have had a diagnosis for a long time, or just want to move better, LifeMotion might be the right place for you. Give us a call and we can schedule a consultation today.
