Life Motion Balance Center recently acquired a solo step harness system for the clinic for safer balance and gait training. This type of training allows for safe participation in treadmill walking, which can be uncomfortable for some people due to balance, issues with foot clearance, and shorter step length.
By allowing the brain to feel like it might experience a fall, neuroplastic changes can happen, so the brain can learn how to walk better and prevent a fall. The harness will not allow the person to actually experience a fall so people can practice walking tall with confidence. You can see here this patient is beginning to decrease his reliance on what his hands are feeling on the treadmill.
As he practices, he’s eventually able to take both hands off even for short bursts of time. It’s this type of training that allows the brain to learn faster. This is the cutting edge of gait therapy.
